The Sticker History

The stickers were first introduced on the 1978 Series 1 “Series Special”. Each dealer was given a batch of stickers to place on the car at the dealership or the buyer would get the sticker and place it on the car themselves. This means there is no relationship from sticker to VIN. The only relationship is the dealership it self. The stickers continued to be placed on X1/9’s till late 1981 i would say only by one or two dealer as you don't see it often on the later models. This was probably old stock of stickers as they made more numbers then actual cars imported.

Original vs Reproduction

There were a number of reproductions made by enthusiast over the years. None of the reproductions look like and original. Below are a few examples of how to tell the difference.

The numbers on an original never seem to line up. Where on a reproduction they are usually computer printed and on a very straight and accurate line up.

The top two flags are original, but one is faded by the sun. The bottom two are reproductions and use a darker blue in the flag.

If you look closely where I have circled on the union jack the original has a well defined gap of white, the reproductions have no gap or a very small gap. (sorry don’t have a clear picture.)

The corners on a reproduction have a different shape to them, they also have a different thickness to the lines.
